Écluse: Unlocking A Paso Favorite

Eve Bushman, February 26, 2016

A wine pal turned me onto Écluse wines and introduced me to the owner, Steve Lock, nearly a decade ago. We even had Steve out to Santa Clarita Valley to share some tastes. In 2010 we published a reader’s photos from his visit to the winery in Paso Robles and our Contributing Editor Michael Perlis did a story from the same visit.

Fast forward all these years and I’ve tasted Écluse at a few wine events, but I hadn’t sat down to really focus on the aromas and flavors of these Paso Robles varieties. I was over due.

2013 Écluse Ensemble

37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Petit Verdot, 27% Merlot, 3% Malbec

Best of Class – San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (This 2016 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition broke all former records with over 7,100 entries, and of those entries, only 150 wines were awarded Best of Class!.)

Eve’s Tasting Notes

Whiffs of ripe plums, juicy black cherry, black pepper, the darkest of chocolate, wet bark and leaves; then on the mouth I got rich dark fruit – blackberry and boysenberry – as well as lovely spice that kept my taste buds tingling and angling for another sip. If you like juicy, spicy, dark wines, this one is good to drink right now. Go for it. 92 Eve pts.

2013 Écluse Cabernet Sauvignon, Lock Vineyard

Double Gold – San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

Eve’s Tasting Notes

Dusty black cherries, cracked black and green peppercorns, cream, pleasant perfumy aromatics and a nice velvety balance all came through in the aromas – a feeling I think all three wines had. In the mouth, again with lovely balance; I tasted fresh blueberry, blackberry, drying tannins and a lengthy peppery finish. 92 Eve pts.

2013 Écluse Rendition

48% Syrah, 39% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre

Double Gold – San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

Eve’s Tasting Notes

I got the nicest aromas of velvety milk chocolate, plums, dark cherry cola, cloves and a good cigar, all in balance without one overpowering the other. Then, in the mouth, the same rich flavors but with the addition of a strong backbone of spice and tannin. I can see why this wine was a double gold, it’s highly drinkable now to my palate and due to the balance it seems older than a 2013. 93 Eve pts.

My Conclusion

Really, really, glad that I had this opportunity to re-visit Ecluse. I have to say I like the direction their wines are headed, and that I think that I enjoyed them more this time than I did so many years ago. Cheers to them for sharing these three outstanding wines: a Bordeaux style blend, a straight Cabernet Sauvignon and a GSM.

About Écluse Wines

Écluse Wines may not be familiar to you yet, but stand by! As the home of a San Francisco Chronicle Sweepstakes winning Best Red Wine, we at Écluse are dedicated to producing limited production, handcrafted, award-winning wines from our very own Lock Vineyard. Nestled in the gently rolling hillside terroir on the desired Westside of the Paso Robles AVA, we feature Bordeaux and Rhone style wines, as well as our fabulous Zinfandel. Our wines are often described as silky, lush, smooth and approachable when first released, becoming even more complex and elegant as they age!

A question almost always asked of us is about our name, Écluse. The explanation is simple – Écluse is French for the locks on the canals that gently carve their way through the remarkable French wine country – since our last name is Lock, the name Écluse for our wines was born.

Our philosophy from the beginning is that great fruit makes great wine. Having our own small winery onsite gives us the added benefit of picking and crushing small lots throughout the vineyard when the fruit has reached its peak flavors. Having the control from the vineyard to the bottle insures that Écluse will remain the truly remarkable wine that it is today!

We invite you to “Savor the Wine that is truly Écluse!”
